FAQs
-
A power flush is a process carried out by central heating engineers designed to remove sludgy build-up in the boiler, pipes and radiators that make up your central heating system. A power flushing unit sends water through your central-heating system at high velocity to dislodge any build-up of sludge, rust and other debris.
This helps to improve the efficiency and lifespan of the boiler and central heating system and prevent breakdowns. As with so many heating issues, regular maintenance (including power flushing) is the best way to keep your system in shape.
-
One or more of these symptoms could indicate that your central heating system would benefit from a power flush:
cold radiators with only a hot strip at the top
black sludgy water in the heating system (shown by radiator removal or a failed heating pump or valve replacement)
poor circulation to a system that used to work better
a magnet attaching to copper pipe-work (signs of iron sludge within)
an overflowing attic header tank (although this could also be caused by a pump being set at the wrong speed).
A power flush can also be a good idea if you're having a new boiler installed but have an old central heating system with old-style radiators.
-
No. Draining the system will only remove the lightest, finest sludge, while the larger, more problematic debris remains stuck inside. Power flushing increases water flow and ensures all sludge is removed from the system's many flow paths, giving a much more thorough clean.
-
Not at all. When carried out by experienced professionals like Power Flush Scotland, a power flush is a clean and controlled process. We use specialist Kamco equipment that connects directly to your heating system, so there's no need to remove radiators or drain the entire system manually.
All waste water and sludge are safely extracted into our machine, and we take great care to protect your floors and property throughout the job. You’ll be left with cleaner pipework, warmer radiators, and no mess to worry about.
-
Sludge is a mixture of rust, debris, and sediment that builds up in your central heating system over time. It can clog pipes, radiators, and other components, leading to inefficiency and breakdowns.
